Lisa Loomer’s Roe traces the history of the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade—but it is not strictly a historical piece: rather it examines the strikingly humane stories of the women/men at the center of this case, striving to explore all sides of the polarizing issues inherent to this debate.
The play premiered last April in Ashland, Oregon, and has exploded onto the national theatre scene, sustaining successful runs in Washington, DC (opening the week of Donald Trump’s inauguration and simultaneously The Women’s March on Washington), and most recently at Berkeley Repertory Theatre: buoyed, in no small part, by our shifting political landscape and the current events and aftermath of our presidential election. The arguments at the core of this play are timely and now, presciently so.
