PMA Professor J. Ellen Gainor will be giving 2 talks on plays by British Edwardian dramatist Cicely Hamilton, at the Mint Theater in NYC. During her first talk on Friday, October 23, Gainor will introduce a one night only reading of Hamilton’s play "Diana of Dobson's" (1908), about a shop girl and her financial struggles in England's class-based society. The second talk will be on her play "Phyl" (1911), which is concerned with similar economic themes and which is having its US premiere with this production. This talk will talk place on Saturday, October 24, after the matinee performance.
“Cicely Hamilton (1872-1952) was an exceptional artist: an actor, playwright, novelist, suffragist, and essayist who championed women's rights and women's economic security throughout her career,” said Gainor. “Her plays speak to us as cogently today as they did over a hundred years ago, and I am excited to share more about her life and work with the Mint's audiences.”
