PMA Professor Austin Bunn will screen his short documentary about an upstate burlesque academy, Getting Almost Naked, at the Buffalo Film Festival, on October 9.
Getting Almost Naked (23 mins) focuses on the Bees Knees Burlesque Academy in Cortland NY, where five adults -- a punk rock hairdresser, custodian, Southern Baptist-bred college administrator, queer composer, and mother of four -- sign up for a 10-week "burlesque bootcamp" leading to a nerve-wracking public show and discover what it means to be seen. The short will screen with the world premiere of Save the Queen, a documentary about a Memphis-based drag queen made by a regional filmmaking team.
"I'm excited to share this intimate, uplifting new documentary, collaboratively made with students in the Rural Humanities Seminar, with audiences in Western New York,” said Bunn. “The Buffalo Film Festival is its 20th year and will screen a number of narrative and documentary films made by New York State filmmakers. The short doc will also screen at the Black Bear Film Festival in Milford PA the same weekend -- wish I could be in two places at once!"
