On Wednesday, February 18, at 6:00 pm, Cornell Cinema will host a screening of Memories of Love Returned, a documentary by filmmaker Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine. PMA Ph.D. Candidate Rejoice Abutsa will join Mwine for a post-screening conversation.
Memories of Love Returned explores themes around photography, memory, digitality, gender, and sexuality through the story of Ugandan photographer Kibaate Aloysius Ssalongo and the profound impact his work had on his community.
“I am excited to join filmmaker Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine for the post-screening discussion for Memories of Love Returned because it addresses many of the critical questions in my research and scholarly interests,” said Abutsa. “The film's exploration of photography as a tool for preserving community memory, its engagement with questions of digitality and archival practice, and its nuanced treatment of gender, sexuality, and patriarchy within the context of Ugandan visual culture make it an invaluable text for thinking through how images shape collective identity and history. I plan to ask questions about collective memory, the values of community, and the ethics and practice of documentary filmmaking!”
Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine is a Carol B. Epstein Visiting Artist in the Department of Performing and Media Arts. This event is co-sponsored by Telluride House and the Institute for African Development.
