Jayme Kilburn receives Community Outreach Award from the Graduate School

Jayme Kilburn, a PhD student in the Department of , received the 2019 Community Outreach Award from the Cornell University Graduate School’s Office of Inclusion and Student Engagement (OISE). Jayme was selected for her “dedication and positive impact using theater to create positive social change within and beyond the walls of the academy, especially as it relates to women, incarcerated men, and women artists.”

This award is given to any student, group, or organization that has strengthened a community through efforts to build partnerships, increase student involvement, and provide opportunities for mutual learning and understanding between Cornell University and the targeted community.

"I was surprised and thrilled when I learned I won this award. Often, I feel that as graduate students we tend to keep our heads down and just do the work. It was really nice to be recognized by OISE, my nominator and committee chair, Sara Warner, and a jury of my peers. It was at Cornell that I became interested in community-engaged work,” said Kilburn.

“Initiatives such as Engaged Cornell and OISE, as well as my committee, have made it possible for me to pursue several community-based projects this year including the Women's Performance Workshop in Baltimore City, co-organizing the Feminist Directions symposium (with the fabulous Kelly Richmond and undergrads Carley Robinson and Sara Pistono), and serving as a facilitator in the Phoenix Players Theatre Group led by Bruce Levitt. I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity and privilege to use performance as a tool for building communities. Being recognized for it is just the cherry on top!"
