Solemn to outrageous, still to manic, is how Jumay Chu, senior lecturer in the Cornell University Department of (PMA) describes the range of short modern dance pieces showcased in the upcoming annual Mini Locally Grown Dance concert (November 30–December 2), entitled “Cut and Paste (Slivers).”
“The show is an unexpected, cut-loose journey,” said Chu, who is one of the concert’s choreographers, as well as its director. “There is a mix of about fifteen short pieces choreographed by our dance composition students—solos, duets, sextets—layered between other dance configurations.”
Also contributing choreography are PMA dance faculty members Byron Suber and Nic Ceynowa, as well as PhD student Rosalie Purvis, whose piece embodies the cut-and-paste theme in a far-flung way.
“For her work, Rosalie collaborated over Skype with a dancer in India,” explained Chu. “This piece will have Rosalie performing live, in a duet with a video of her partner projected onto a screen.”
Performances of “Cut and Paste (Slivers)” will be in the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts’ Class of ’56 Dance Theatre November 30, December 1, and December 2 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 at schwartztickets.com or at the Schwartz Center box office.
