The Baltimore Waltz, written by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Paula Vogel MFA '76, PhD '16, is a comedic, yet ultimately tragic, story of the extents we will go to for those we love. The play was written following the devastating aftermath of the 1980s AIDS crisis that took the lives of thousands of gay men across the country.
This tragedy taught all the family, friends, and loved ones of those who died that life can be short and despite the stresses of our daily lives we must appreciate every day and cherish those we love.
The story is about a sister, Anna, diagnosed with "Acquired Toilet Disease" and the outrageous European adventures she and her brother Carl share to celebrate their remaining time together. It is a comedic dedication Paula wrote based on the European vacation she and her brother dreamed of going on before his death.

The closing night reception on Saturday, November 5, will include collecting donations for Haven, an LGBTQ student union, in support of HIV testing, counseling, and education at Cornell University.
The Baltimore Waltz won the OBIE Award for Best Play in 1992 and made its off-Broadway debut that same year.
Vogel won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play How I Learned to Drive. She was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2012, and in spring 2016 she received her PhD from Cornell University's Department of .
