PMAPS Colloquium with André Brock Jr.

Join the Department of Performing and Media Arts for PMAPS Colloquium with André Brock Jr.: “'The Call is Coming from Inside the House': Algorithmic Inflammation, Misogynoir, and Black Respectability,” on Friday, November 13, at 5:00, in the Film Forum, Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts. This event is free and open to the public.

Drawing on recent controversies surrounding Tuskegee University's dress code and Nikole Hannah-Jones' New York Times article on predominantly Black schools, this talk highlights how online discourses of respectability take shape as a carceral governmentality requiring portraying certain Black bodies as deviant and how engagement algorithms and media form inflames (and also contests) respectability politics.
