PMA Professor J. Ellen Gainor Participates in Susan Glaspell Symposium at the Public Theater

In November, PMA Professor J. Ellen Gainor will be participating in a series of events about playwright Susan Glaspell at the Public Theater in New York City. These events include a reading and post-performance discussion of her play Trifles, her play Inheritors, and a symposium on her life and career called Susan Glaspell Comes Home. Gainor has also served as a scholarly consultant on their production of Glaspell's play The Verge which will be the centerpiece of these related events.

“Much of my scholarly career has been devoted to the work of American writer Susan Glaspell (1876-1948), who won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1931,” said Gainor. “Glaspell co-founded the influential theatre company, the Provincetown Players, which also launched the career of Eugene O'Neill. I wrote the first book-length study of Glaspell's plays called Susan Glaspell in Context, co-edited the book Susan Glaspell: Complete Plays, edited a collection of scholarly essays on her life and career, and have written multiple articles and program essays on Glaspell. This production at the internationally renowned Public Theater is a crowning achievement for all the dedicated scholars and artists who have worked so tirelessly to return Glaspell to the prominence she and her works so richly deserve.”
