In Honor of the 30th Anniversary of Toni Morrison’s Nobel Prize
The Department of Performing and Media Arts is proud to present DESDEMONA--
Call for singers, performers, dramaturgs, designers, investigators, crew. No preparation or experience necessary to audition! Scripts will be available on site.
Tuesday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the Flex Theatre in the Schwartz Center are auditions for actors to perform in the piece alongside World Renowned Singer/Songwriter Rokia Traore http://www.rokiatraore.net/en/
The first group of auditions will begin at 7:00 p.m., and the second group will begin at 7:45 p.m. Join at whichever time would work best for you.
Toni Morrison's 2011 Work DESDEMONA is a poetic, collaborative response to the work of Shakespeare's OTHELLO. This work interrogates issues of gender and race, displacement, domestic abuse, healing, addressing the possibilities of forgiveness and the afterlife. It is a complexly interwoven text presenting myriad opportunities for research and artistic discovery around iteration, generation, the source material, and the haunting musical score by Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traoré.
We are interested in working with self-motivated students/artists with a diversity of interests and backgrounds.
We will be presenting DESDEMONA to the public October 27-28, at the very end of October or in November. We aim to work with your schedule. Rehearsals will generally take place up to four times a week for up to 3 hours in length. Three of those rehearsals will take place during the week, one potentially on the weekend. Not every actor will be called to every rehearsal.
Together, we will create a schedule that will work for everyone.
- Before rehearsals officially begin on Monday, September 18th, the cast will meet weekly on
Wednesdays from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm
- No rehearsals will take place over Fall Break
- Designer Run-Through will take place on Monday, October 16th
- Sitzprobe will take place on Thursday, October 19th
- Tech rehearsals are Saturday, October 21st & Sunday, October 22nd – Times TBA
- Dress Rehearsals are Tuesday, October 24th through Thursday, October 26th – Times TBA
- Performances are Friday, October 27th & Saturday, October 28th @ 7:30 pm; call time would be 6:30 p.m.
