Ozgur Cicek, the visiting Luigi Einaudi Chair Scholar in European and International Studies, will talk about "Transnational Kurdish Cinema: Aesthetics, Memory, and the Archive."
Kurdish cinema, categorized as such since the 2000s, is a transnational cinema that is produced from multiple locations, including Europe, Turkey, Iran, Rojava, and Iraqi Kurdistan.
In this talk, Ozgur Cicek will explore answers for questions such as how do Kurdish films compensate for Kurdish history writing? How do Kurdish filmmakers resist censorship practices? What is the impact of "amateurism" on Kurdish filmmaking? And how does this "amateur" spirit influence Kurdish film aesthetics?
Ozgur Cicek received her PhD from Binghamton University, and returned to teach in Turkey. Because of the political circumstances there, she had to leave last fall, and is now a visiting scholar at ZeM (Brandenburgisches Zentrum für Medienwissenschaften) in Berlin, Germany.
