PMA Studios Celebrates Successful Completion of "Milkshake Kiss"

Spring 2025 PMA STUDIOS

The inaugural production of PMA Studios has successfully wrapped up with the premiere of Milkshake Kiss at the Kiplinger Theatre, marking a significant milestone for Cornell's Department of Performing and Media Arts. The short film, written by Audrey Pinard '25 and directed by Justin Lee ’26, brought together students, faculty, and industry professionals in an unprecedented collaborative effort.

Under the guidance of Jeffrey Palmer (Associate Professor), Doorim Kim (Lecturer), and Carolyn Michelle Smith (Visiting Lecturer), the production transformed the Schwartz Center's Flex Theatre into a vibrant 1950s-style diner, showcasing the team's impressive set design capabilities. The ten-week film production process gave students practical experience in multiple disciplines, including directing, cinematography, and acting, beginning with comprehensive pre-production planning. Under Palmer's guidance, students learned crucial aspects of directing and producing, including script breakdown and scheduling, while collaborating with directors of photography to develop detailed shot lists and storyboards. Acting students benefited from Smith's expertise in character development and on-set coaching, gaining valuable first-hand experience in professional film set dynamics. Meanwhile, Kim led weekly camera tests and technical training sessions on handling cameras, lighting, and sound gear. Through these regular practical exercises, students developed the skills and confidence to troubleshoot technical challenges efficiently during actual production.

Notable contributions also came from guest speakers including producer Becky Korman, director Ellie Foumbi, and cinematographers Otto Piboon and Gareth Manwaring, who shared invaluable industry insights during the course. The project, which spanned over ten weeks, involved intensive weekend shoots in March and culminated in a successful screening on May 2nd.
