Rehearsing transformation in an American prison

Cornell Department of professor Bruce A. Levitt and graduate student Nick Fesette present a detailed description of the Phoenix Players Theatre Group (PPTG), which comprises incarcerated men at the Auburn Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison in Auburn, New York.

In this piece, Levitt and Fesette detail the history, development, and processes of PPTG and its role in creating transformative theatre that "originates within the participants to repair and restore the aspects of their humanity fractured in incarceration, and [...] works from without, helping to alter public perception of the people reductively marked 'criminal.'”
