PMA Professor Nick Salvato has been appointed the Frederic J. Whiton Professor of Liberal Studies by the Board of Trustees.
The Frederic J. Whiton Professorship was established in 1960. It is supported by the Frederic J. Whiton Memorial Fund, which Mr. Whiton AB ’80 set up in 1948 for the promotion of liberal studies. Mr. Whiton was the director of the Tompkins County Trust Company for 63 years and attended Columbia Law School.
“Alongside feeling incredibly honored to be recognized as a distinguished member of our faculty,” said Salvato, “I am tickled that the honor designates me as someone who does "liberal studies." At its best, liberal means openness to new or progressive ideas in a way that supports democracy, and that sense of the word captures my longstanding approach to thinking, teaching, and writing—an approach that feels all the more urgent in 2025.”
