PMA Alum Allen Porterie ‘20 has been awarded the RCI Theatricals Company Manager Fellowship, and will be working on the upcoming Broadway production of Gypsy. Porterie graduated from Cornell with an English major from A&S and a Theater minor from PMA, where they won the Drama Book Award in 2020. He also got his MFA in Performance as a Public Practice from UT Austin.
Porterie took some time to speak with us about their new role:
Can you share more about the fellowship and your role in the production of Gypsy?
“As a Company Management Fellow at RCI Theatricals, I have the pleasure of working with the lead Company Manager, Claire Trempe and Assistant Company Manager, Luca Fontes in handling the day-to-day operations of putting on a Broadway show. This includes onboarding everyone involved in the show, helping manage payroll each week, relaying communications between producers and the creative teams, and generally serving as a resource for the needs of the company.”
What does it mean to you to be a part of this production?
“I am particularly excited about this role because I get to put my degree in Theater from Cornell, and my MFA from UT Austin, to good use. I am learning the business of Broadway directly from the people who keep it running. I also get to interact with artists whose work I respect and studied in school.
“I would like to add that I found and applied for this role on the Playbill.com ‘Jobs’ postings page. There are opportunities posted there every day, which is about how often I was applying for jobs through the site.”
