graduate students Kriszta Pozsonyi and Jayme Kilburn recently received honors from the Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (FGSS) Program. Pozsonyi received the First-Year Writing Seminar Award for Fall 2019, while Kilburn was appointed to a Teaching Assistantship for next spring.
The First-Year Writing Seminar Award is awarded for demonstrated excellence in teaching and a course proposal related to feminist, gender, and/or sexuality studies. Pozsonyi won for her course "Queer Women in Stand-Up Comedy." Through weekly reading responses and creative assignments, students explore the connections among gender, sexuality, feminism, and stand-up comedians such as Jackie “Moms” Mabley, Margaret Cho, Ellen DeGeneres, Cameron Esposito, and Hannah Gadsby.
The Teaching Assistantship is awarded to a graduate student who is selected from a competitive pool of candidates to work more closely with FGSS faculty. Kilburn will work with incoming faculty member Professor Tao Leigh Goffe on an introductory FGSS course next spring. Kilburn is writing her dissertation on women stage directors, and courses in the Program have informed much of her research.
“As someone whose work is heavily engaged with gender studies, I think this will give me a strong foothold in approaching teaching a similar course one day,” said Kilburn “Also, I love being able to watch burgeoning feminists wrestle with ideas as they begin to form their own!”
