Alumnus Marvin A. Carlson was recently inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in September, 2023. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences is an exclusive international society of prestigious scholars, scientists, and public leaders, who discuss issues affecting the world in hopes of advancing the public good.
Dr. Carlson is Sidney E. Cohn Distinguished Professor of Theatre, Comparative Literature, and Middle Eastern Studies at the Graduate Centre, City University of New York. He earned his PhD in Drama and Theatre from Cornell University in 1961, where he also taught for 18 years. Dr. Carlson has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens, Greece, the ATHE Career Achievement Award, the ASTR Distinguished Scholarship Award, the Bernard Hewitt prize, the George Jean Nathan Award, the Calloway Prize, the George Freedley Award, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
To honor Dr. Carlson's contributions, the Department of Performing and Media Arts organizes an annual competition for the finest student essay in the field of theater or performance, known as the "Marvin Carlson Award." This distinction was established to recognize the significant and positive influence that Dr. Carlson has had on the arts.
