Acting for the Camera Workshops

Former PMA Faculty Carolyn Michelle Smith returns to Cornell to offer two on-camera workshops for student actors, March 12-13.

Workshop #1: Building the Solo Scene On-Camera

Thursday, March 12, 4:45-6:45 pm, Black Box Theatre, Schwartz Center

Open to all students currently or previously enrolled in PMA 2800 and above

This two-hour, participation-based workshop will begin with an introduction to working on a professional set, navigating set dynamics, and understanding the differences between stage and on-camera acting. Actors will also be introduced to essential on-set vocabulary and begin to develop a relationship with the camera as a storytelling partner.

Actors will then create and perform a short solo scene inspired by a character from a play they’ve previously worked on. Using a brief selection of text from the play—or text they create themselves—students will craft a fully realized scene with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Scenes must be no longer than five minutes, include simple clothing elements to support character, and will be recorded for camera.

Workshop #2: On-Camera Audition Technique

Friday, March 13, 3:00-5:00 pm, SB10 Dance Theatre, Schwartz Center

Open to all students who have completed PMA 2800, as well as students currently/formerly enrolled in PMA 3800 and above

This two-hour intensive is designed for advanced actors looking to strengthen their camera audition skills. Prior to class, students will receive two sets of sides and must choose one to memorize and prepare for recording.

We’ll begin with a focused discussion of on-camera audition technique, including framing, eyelines, tone, pacing, text analysis, and best practices for self-taping and recording setup. Actors will then record their chosen side, followed by playback and constructive feedback on performance choices and use of the frame. Active participation and prior preparation are required.
