Department Note

The vision of the Department of Performing and Media Arts is to nurture and mentor artists, performers, writers, and thinkers through the process of event programming. We recognize that all people should see their stories represented, and envision their stories as valuable.

We commit ourselves to creating spaces that actively seek to break down systems of oppression based on race, gender, sexuality, class, ability, and place of origin and empower all to be involved. We seek to stimulate thoughtful discussion and enact social change within our productions and our audiences. It is our goal to make our events accessible to the wider Cornell and Ithaca community, to strengthen bonds and engage inquiry, dialogue, and impact around social and cultural change.

In the 2021-2022 academic year we will help realize a wide range of students’ creative projects, from original plays, to solo performances, to readings, to choreographies, to acting, directorial, and curatorial projects. We are particularly happy that in addition to supporting live performances, we are now also supporting the production of several student thesis films. Enjoy the shows!

Director's Note

If you could look inside someone’s mind, what would it look like? What do you remember? Who do you see? What might you find in the maze of memories? What kind of chaos ensues in this cerebral cage?

As a human being and as a storyteller, I have been waiting a very long time for this opportunity to express myself. To get here has been the ride of my life so far and I couldn’t be happier to share Reach for the Sky with all of you. In developing this project, I originally wrote drafts more “Broadway-style” because I really wanted to explore music onstage. However, it became clear how inauthentic the story, the characters, and the experience felt. I wasn’t communicating the root of the complexity.

Reach for the Sky is the most vulnerable and honest presentation I can give at the moment. The journey I’ve had with discovering my identity as a non-binary human has not been straight nor at all clear. The way my brain works, the way my mind roams, how scattered I can feel; I wanted to capture some of that experience and welcome you to take a peek.

The journey that Sky goes on requires the audience to be present. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being here and being a part of this experience. I’ve had such a hard time being honest with myself through all of my life, and this is my way of articulating myself as authentically as I can. I hope you all enjoy. Thank you endlessly to Arin, Kenny, Luke, and the cast for helping me bring this vision to life. It’s been such an honor to work with all of these talented people.

Cast Profiles

Headshot of Lila Rallatos

Lila Rallatos (She/They) - Sky
Howdy folks! Lila is a gal/non-binary pal who is comically excited to be a part of this experience with all of you. As a writer, director, and actor, they've felt so attached to this show and the personal, queer journey it represents ever since she first read the script. Previously, Lila directed "She Kills Monsters" with the Cog Dog Theater Troupe at Cornell alongside acting in various Cog Dog and Cornell Shakespeare productions since she started studying Environmental Engineering last year. For Lila, "Reach for the Sky" is a perfect exploration of their gender identity manifested on stage.

She has acted in two Cog Dog short plays her first semester of freshman year, and has directed “The Dream of the Burning Boy” last semester.
