Katherine Sender (University of Michigan) will give the talk, "Selling Sex: Mediating Sexual Identifications and Erotica in Transnational Contexts" on Thursday, Octboer 26 at 4:30pm in the Film Forum, Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts.
How do media facilitate the mobility of sexual representations, ideas, and people in the capitalization of sexuality? This talk introcudes Sender's new work on sexual mobilities through a study of sex museums in Asia, Europe, and the U.S.
She focuses on how the museums frame same-sex erotic materials within discourses of cosmopolitanism, and she argues that the limits of cosmopolitanism in a transnational context close down the radical possibilities of same-sex materials. Yet random juxtapositions of people and objects offer queer contact zones not contained by the museums' disciplinary frameworks.
Sender is a professor of media and sexuality in Communication Studies at the University of Michigan. Her work includes "Business, Not Politics: The Making of the Gay Market" (Columbia UP, 2005).
