Theater Critic and Dramaturg Helen Shaw (NYU) will give an open Q&A discussion on Friday, November 10 at 4:30pm in Room 124, Schwartz Center. This talk is part of Cornell PMA's Professional Directions Speaker Series and is free and open to the public.
Shaw is known for both her brilliant criticism of theatrical productions in the U.S. and internationally and for her keen observations on the institutions and underlying structures that make up “the theatre” broadly conceived. Some of her most provocative writing examines the inequalities surrounding pay, education, and production models in the American theatre. Recent essays and articles include, “The State of the Play: A Critic Addresses the Theatre Nation,” in American Theatre and “'There's a real humiliation I feel': the struggle for fair wages off-Broadway" in The Guardian. Shaw has written about theater and performance for Time Out New York since 2005. She has also written for The New York Sun, Performing Arts Journal, The Village Voice, American Theater, and TheatreForum. She wrote the introduction to The Difficulty of Crossing a Field: Collected Plays by Mac Wellman (pub. University of Minnesota Press) and is at work on her own book on Wellman’s life and plays.
