PMA Associate Professor Samantha Noelle Sheppard was quoted in an article from Vox called “The Lasting impact of The Color Purple.”
The new musical film The Color Purple was released in theaters in December, 2023, building on several previous versions of the story, including the 2004 Broadway musical, the 1985 film, and the original 1982 novel by Alice Walker.
“I don’t think the movie’s about pain,” Associate Professor Samantha Noelle Sheppard says. “I think people have a hard time sitting with a movie featuring traumatic events still being ultimately a story about love, sisterhood, family, and connection.”
