PMA graduate student receives honorable mention for writing prize

Joshua Bastian Cole, a PhD candidate in the Cornell University Department of , received honorable mention for his submission for the Chris Holmlund Graduate Student Writing Prize, awarded by the Society for Cinema & Media Studies Queer and Trans Caucus.

Cole’s essay, “Missing Things: The Eerie Allure of Hidden Trans Masculinity in John Carpenter and Rhys Ernst Films,” draws connections, through a trans masculine lens, between John Carpenter's Starman (1984) and The Thing (1982) with Rhys Ernst's The Thing (2012), arguing the films speak to each other in unplanned, unexpected ways, primarily due to concepts of missingness, forgottenness, disposability, or simply what's left out of view.

As an honorable mention designee, Cole’s essay will be noted by the journal New Review of Film and Television Studies’ upcoming volume 19, issue 2. The New Review of Film and Television Studies, a Routledge publication, is a leading media studies journal that features contributions from intersectional, diverse perspectives and underrepresented groups.
