Looking in the large square window panes of Cornell’s Rand Hall, with their industrial vibe, one would expect to see College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP) students at work. Instead, three female dancers move in and out of frame: both the physical frames of the windows, and the camera frame of videographer and AAP senior Brad Nathanson.

So begins the video trailer for Captured Spaces, the spring Locally Grown Dance Festival from the Department of Performing and Media Arts; the dance concert will run March 23–25 at Cornell’s Schwartz Center. Directors and choreographers Jumay Chu, Ed Intemann, Byron Suber, and Nic Ceynowa are faculty members in the Department of Performing and Media Arts.

Captured Spaces is the capstone of a months-long journey for the dancers, choreographers, and videographer. “We began working with dancers in late August, capturing their dancing on video in various locations,” says Chu of her piece, one of three in Captured Spaces. “During the performance, the video will be projected concurrently with the live dancers: the screened figures sometimes shadowing the real dancers, sometimes recalling the ghost of other places.”

The three dance pieces explore the Captured Spaces theme in different ways; each work reveals the distinctive collaboration of choreographer/director, dancers, and video artist through the power and beauty of the student dancers.

Performances of Captured Spaces are in the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts’ Kiplinger Theatre March 23, 24 & 25 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at schwartztickets.com or at the Schwartz Center box office Tuesday–Saturday, 2:30 p.m.–8:00 p.m. The Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts is located at 430 College Avenue in Ithaca.
