Welcome to the Department of Performing and Media Arts!
What does it mean to engage in the art of creation? In Cornell's
Department of Performing and Media Arts, students are exposed to the breadth and depth of experiences and knowledge from all areas of our department while they are challenged to
question assumptions and to explore the relation of theory and practice.
Students with varied interests -- in criticism, film production, theatre, acting, directing, theatre and media history, screenwriting, dancing, film, media, sound design, lighting, costumes, multimedia work or international media and theatre work -- can all find courses, productions, events, clubs and organizations, competitions and special opportunities at the Schwartz Center.
All of the department’s activities build on a commitment to diversity and collaboration across all areas of the department, as well as across Cornell and the broader community.
Our Performing and Media Arts major combines training and study in theatre, film, dance and performing and media arts, integrating all of these areas into one streamlined major. Many students decide to double major within the College of Arts and Sciences, combining our major with areas as diverse as molecular biology, Asian studies or economics. Others integrate creative arts into their major by either minoring in either theatre, film or dance or just signing up for one of our intriguing classes to enliven their schedule!
And many students come to our building to learn from our visiting artists, design sets, create films and multimedia work, act in our performances, write dramatic work, dance or express themselves and enjoy the camaraderie of other creative spirits.
